In the past, I was able to connect hemi Dell Vostro's laptop to my television using an HDMI cable, and hear the sound come from my television. I'm not sure what has changed on my computer, but this no longer happens. I can still connect my laptop to my television and see the display, but I can no longer hear any sound from the television.

Online people are suggesting that a known issue is that updating the realtek drivers can cause sound to only come from the speakers and not through HDMI. Perhaps this has happened to me. Do you know what this error means? Only it doesn't appear to be documented anywhere.
Also the 'Gigabyte realtek audio manager' has dosens of settings on several pages which do things like 'disable front panel detection jack' etc. I wonder if some combination of these flags could be what's causing this to miss the HDMI?

Compare the driver version. If the other device that you've mentioned is using the same graphics card unit, then compare the version that's running on that device versus the one running on the affected device. To do this follow these steps: Go to Device Manger.
Click the drop -down arrow to view the audio driver. Right-click and select Properties. Check the version under the Driver tab. If the version doesn't match. Manually download the driver from the support site, then install the same version to the affected device.
